Crossing the States

Ah! It has been a very long time since I posted anything! And a lot has happened!

I am now in Los Angeles for the summer doing an internship at Acme Filmworks until mid-June at which time I will start my other internship at Sony Pictures Imageworks. I've been watching a lot of great films out here and getting some good ideas for shorts I'd like to make. I'm getting more interested in learning Maya and I'd like to pursue it while I'm out here. I'm also learning more about Adobe AfterEffects which I'm really excited about!

My mom was nice enough to drive with me out here from New Hampshire and we had a very good time stopping to admire the view of the canyons and the crazy lights and people in Las Vegas. All in all a very good trip. We also stopped at an awesome dinosaur museum in Fruita, CO. So exciting! I took about a million pictures...

My new found appreciation for diabetes patients

The picture to the left is from a show I'm in currently in the Arnheim Gallery at MassArt called Means of Accumulation. It's part of an Art Ed class.

This piece was born from the results below. I basically limited my diet to foods without High Fructose Corn Syrup and then experimented with different drinks. The first week was only water, the second only drinks with natural sugars and the last week was only drinks with high fructose corn syrup. I weighed myself and measured how many times I went to the bathroom and also I bought a blood glucose meter to measure my blood sugar twice a day. Which is why I have new respect for people who have to deal with that everyday. It's a pain!

Getting closer! (maybe?)

Played around with the editing and sound on degree project. I'm happy with the subtitling idea. I'm trying to find humor in the subject matter. I'm nearly done with shooting which is exciting.

My dad is playing the guitar for the piece. I love acoustic guitar! (and guitar in general)

Animat(ron)ic

This was my animatic for the mid-semester crit. I'm not completely satisfied with the sound. (Not just because it's my voice) But it sounds a little too beatnik for me I guess. My dad is going to be playing acoustic guitar for the piece so I'm excited about that.

After the crit, I was thinking about what Steve was saying how cats probably don't make good storytellers. I kind of want to run with this idea and make it more an autobiography of this cat rather than a straight forward telling of his life. I think it would open the piece to more possibilities.

I'm also thinking of scratching the narration and making them into subtitles and using myself for the cat meowing.

Branded!

I was working on my branding material last night til late and I came up with this:

I'm really excited about this dinosaur/shadow/ink thing that's going on. I'm 99.9% done with my reel. I just need to tweak a few things with the font and color correct the opening. Otherwise, I'm happy with it.

Tonight, I've got some work to do on a piece for the "Means of Accumulation" Art Education show that's going up a little later in April in the Arnheim Gallery at MassArt. For the project, I took 3 weeks where the first week I could only drink water, second week only drinks with natural sugars (real fruit juice, sodas without HFCS) and the last week was only HFCS drinks. So much soda. I recorded my blood glucose levels, weight, bathroom trips and number of drinks. I will post the results soon. At the moment, I'm working on putting together a mixed media painting that will be backlit.

Degree Project!

I wanted to give a quick overview of the couple of projects I'm working on right now.

So, of course,
there's my degree project for animation. It started out as something completely different back in september but as I was working on it, I found that I wasn't in love with my idea so I changed it. The story thus far is about an elderly cat who is ruminating about life over the course of a day. I started out in ink but decided that I wanted to build something and use real places and settings. I spent the better part of january on the cat puppet.

After doing the stop motion for the piece, I'm going to be rotoscoping with oil paint. I did this test by putting a piece of plexiglass over my monitor and painting the oils onto it. I'm getting close to the rotoscoping point in production.

I will also keep the blog posted as my website goes up.

Best wishes everyone!
